What is LASIK?
Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an elective vision correction procedure that is performed using a microkeratome and an excimer laser. It is a comfortable, safe and effective outpatient procedure that corrects a wide range of vision problems. LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Who is a candidate for LASIK?
The ideal LASIK patient is someone who is over 18 years of age with healthy corneas and a relatively stable prescription. People with certain medical conditions or pregnant and nursing women may not be good candidates. The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for LASIK is to have a proper screening and a thorough evaluation with the surgeon. Schedule a FREE SCREENING today! What are the possible benefits from having LASIK?
LASIK results in a person’s reduced dependency on eyeglasses and contacts or eliminates the need for corrective lenses all together. Most patients achieve distance vision of 20/40 or better which is enough to pass a driver’s exam without corrective lenses.
What type of excimer laser does Coastal Eye Group use?
The surgeons at Coastal Eye Group use the most technologically advanced excimer laser, VISX S3 Smooth Scan System.
Is LASIK covered by my insurance?
Although most insurance companies do not cover LASIK because it is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, we recommend calling your insurance company to be certain.
Is there any pain involved with LASIK?
Patients tell us they feel only slight discomfort, not pain during the procedure. After the procedure, most people report a slightly irritated eye for a few hours, like if you rubbed an eyelash in your eye. But pain is subjective, and when you learn more about the procedure you will form your own opinion of what to expect.
Has anyone ever gone blind from a Laser Vision Correction Procedure?
There have been zero reported cases of total loss of vision.
Are there any side effects with Laser Vision Correction?
As with any type of surgery, side effects and complications can occur. All potential side effects and complications will be discussed further at the time of the Laser Vision Correction consultation.
Why not go to a discount Laser Vision Correction center?
With laser vision correction, safety, outcomes, and patient satisfaction should be the deciding factor behind the center you choose, not the cost. It is important to be comfortable with the surgeon performing your surgery.
How much time off of work/school will I need?
LASIK requires minimal time from the patient. We recommend taking the day after surgery off, however, most patients go back to work the very next day after their post-op appointment.
Will I still need my reading glasses?
Everyone over the age of 40 will eventually experience presbyopia resulting in the need for reading glasses or bifocals. Although LASIK can treat a wide range of vision problems, it cannot treat presbyopia (an age-related process).
