What Should I Expect During My Eye Exam?
At Coastal Eye Group, your eye exam begins with a review of your medical and family history to assess your risk for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. From there, our doctors conduct a comprehensive series of tests and evaluations to fully assess your eye health, including:
- Pupil assessment and dilation
- Slit-lamp exam, used to view the front and back of the eye
- Eye pressure test, used to screen for glaucoma
- Confrontation visual fields, or testing your peripheral vision
- Visual acuity, or testing the clarity of your sight
Depending on your unique risk factors and finding, additional testing may be performed.
When Should I Schedule an Eye Exam?
How often you need a comprehensive eye exam depends on your age, overall health, and family history. Your eye doctor at Coastal Eye Group will recommend a schedule that is right for you.
If you or someone in your family has a history of eye disease, you may need exams more often so your doctor can watch for early signs of changes. As we get older, comprehensive eye exams become even more important. Many conditions, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, are more common after age 40.
Certain health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune diseases, can also increase your risk for eye problems.
